Jeriel Austa was born at Malu'u, Malaita in 1942. He was educated at King George VI School (q.v.) to Form Three and in 1964 joined the Solomon Islands Police Force. He was promoted to Corporal in 1965, Sergeant in 1967, Inspector in 1970, and Senior Inspector in 1971, when he was in command of the Western District force, and then officer-in-charge in Honiara. Early in 1973, he became Commanding Officer for Eastern District. He attended a three-month intensive course on police work in Sydney, and also a six-month metropolitan police course at Hendon College, U.K. He resigned from the Police Force in March 1973 after appearing in the Honiara Magistrate Court, which found him guilty of a criminal offence but did not record a conviction. He was elected as the member for North West Malaita in the 1973 Governing Council. (NS 6 July 1973)
