Born in 1916, Michael David Irving Gass joined the Colonial Service in 1939 in the Gold Coast, Africa, and served there until 1958, when he was appointed Chief Secretary to the Western Pacific High Commission. From 1939 to 1945 he served with the British Armed Forces. He was appointed Colonial Secretary, Hong Kong in 1965 and took up the position of High Commissioner for the Western Pacific on 6 March 1969, serving until 1973. Knighted during his term in office, he never married. He was replaced by Donald Collin Cumyn Luddington (q.v.), who also served as the Solomon Islands' first Governor. (NS 15 Oct. 1968)
