The cousin of the Queen, HRH Prince Richard of Gloucester, second son of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, arrived in Honiara on 21 September 1969 on his way to New Guinea. He spent the evening as a guest of the High Commissioner. Prince Michael returned as Duke of Gloucester (he inherited the title after his father's death in 1974), with his wife Brigitte, Duchess of Gloucester, to represent the Queen at the independence celebrations on 7 July 1978.
