Ben Kiriau, born in 1931 in Fouia village in northwest Malaita, joined the Police Force in 1950, and in 1952, as a Corporal, went to Britain for a six-month course at Hendon Police College. He was promoted to Sub-Inspector in 1957 and in April 1967 returned to Britain for a further six-month course at Bramshill Police College. He was appointed an Assistant Superintendent in command of the Malaita Police in 1968. This meant that all four districts had Solomon Islander Police Commanders. In 1971 Kiriau was promoted to Superintendant, and in 1975 to Deputy Commissioner. He was also a lay canon in the Church of Melanesia and a member of the Synod. (NS 31 Jan. 1968; SND 7 Jan. 1977)
