Yip Yuk, born in 1903, came to the Solomon Islands in 1920 at the age of seventeen to work for Lever Brothers at Gavutu and then on Nggela. During the Second World War he and his family escaped to Makira. When the Americans arrived he joined them at Lungga. In 1946 he took up residence in Old Chinatown in Honiara, and in 1954 he opened a store where he lived with his wife and family. He died in September 1968, survived by his wife, two children and a brother. (NS 15 Nov. 1968)
