Place: Kukum Airfield

Details

This was Honiara's first commercial airfield and was used constantly up until 5 May 1958 when Henderson Airfield (q.v.) began operations. It was constructed during the Second World War (q.v.) as Fighter II airfield. It became the Honiara Golf Club, although the field was also used for two periods during 1959 when floods damaged the new Lungga Bridge and cut off access to Henderson. It was still in occasional use as late as 1969. (NS Apr. 1958; Jan. 1959, Aug. 1959; personal communications from Terry Brown, 27 July 2011; and Alan Lindley, 30 June 2011)
