Details

The Government Information Service produced the British Solomon Islands Protectorate
News Sheet fortnightly from 1955 to 1974, with bimonthly issues beginning in 1955 and 1956. It was upgraded to a monthly publication in 1957 and to a fortnightly in 1962. In 1975, the News Sheet was turned into a weekly newspaper called Solomons News Drum, with a successful trial edition launched on 25 October 1974. In July 1975 it was estimated that fifteen thousand people read each issue. In mid-1982, Solomon News Drum was taken over by five Solomon Islanders and renamed the Solomon Star, which eventually became a daily and has been run as a private newspaper ever since.
