Concept: Water Supplies

Details

Honiara's water supply came from springs in the Lengakiki area, which provided a partly gravity and partly pumped supply, from boreholes at Kukum and from ground water drawn from an infiltration gallery and boreholes near the Mataniko River. Experimental chlorination of Honiara's water supply began in late 1961, and a plant was fully operational from April 1963. By 1974, piped water was also provided at Auki, Malu'u, Gizo, Munda, Dodo Creek, Kirakira, Santa Cruz and Tulagi. (NS May 1961, 30 Apr. 1963; AR 1974, 92)
