Born in 1891, Edward Douglas (Harry) Martin's father was an Englishman and his mother was Nei Tiana of Tabiteuea in the Gilbert Islands. He was educated at Vunapope Sacred Heart School at Rabaul in New Guinea. He arrived in the Solomon Islands in 1907 from the Gilbert Islands. He later became a planter in the Western Solomons and married Grace Ashley. In 1945, he moved to Honiara where he was employed by the Public Works Department until his death on 17 November 1968. His four daughters and a son survived him: Dorothy Wickham, Linda Kuper, Grace MacIndoe, Freda Martin and Joe Martin. (NS 30 Nov. 1968)
