Peter Taloni was born on 1 November 1929 at Laulasi in Malaita's Langalanga Lagoon. He was educated at Langalanga primary school, St John's Marist Brothers School, Cawaci at Ovalau, Fiji, and Seminary Secondary School at Namosau, also in Fiji. His teaching career began at Mbuma on Malaita in 1952, after which he moved to King George VI School (q.v.). In 1954, he became a clerk in the BSIP Department of Agriculture, and in 1955, Manager of the Catholic Workers Society store. In 1956, he was a boatbuilder at the Catholic Mission sawmill at Mbuma. He was elected in 1958 to be Councillor for the Langalanga Ward. He joined the Malaita Council (q.v.) headquarters at Aimela in 1959 as Assistant Clerk. In 1960 he became Assistant Treasurer, in 1961 its Treasurer, and in 1964 was appointed Clerk and Treasurer to the Malaita Council. In 1967 Taloni was elected to the Legislative Council (q.v.) as member for Central Malaita. That year he was married with six children. (NS 21 June 1967)
