Catholic Father Emery de Klerk arrived in the Protectorate in 1935 and left in 1960, with only one overseas break in 1953. For most of his years in the Solomon Islands he was parish priest at Tangarare in the Sugu District of Guadalcanal. During the Second World War, Father de Klerk was a coastwatcher (q.v.) and in 1948 he received the highest American civil decoration, the Medal for Freedom, with Bronze Palm. (NS July 1960)
