William Piato was born at Santa Cruz in 1926 and was educated at All Hallows' School at Pawa (q.v.) on Ugi. He joined the Forestry Department in 1954, and attended a one-year forestry course in Fiji. He spent the main part of his career at Vanikolo, where, with little supervision, he was in charge of all forestry work. He then transferred to Gizo as Assistant Forester. Married with four children, he received the British Empire Medal in 1970. (NS 15 Jan. 1970)
