Edmond Kiva was born at Hae in the Russell Islands on 15 April 1915. He was educated (in the Mota language) at St. Mary's School at Maravovo (q.v.) and All Hallows' School at Pawa (q.v.), and also at St. Peter's Theological College in Siota (q.v.). In 1938, he visited New Zealand for two months as a member of a Melanesian Mission (q.v.) deputation. In 1942, Kiva served with coastwatchers in the Russell Islands. He was ordained an Anglican priest in 1947, and that year he became Headmaster at St. Mary's (1947-1952). He was subsequently Rector of Honiara (1952-1953), District Priest in the Russell Islands (1953-1957), Rural Dean of Eastern District (1958-1964), and Archdeacon of the Eastern Outer Islands from 1964 until his retirement in 1970. Canon Kiva accompanied Bishop Hill (q.v.) to Australia in August 1960 to begin a deputation tour throughout the country, lecturing and preaching for six months under the auspices of the Australian Board of Missions. In 1967, he was elected to the Legislative Council (q.v.) as member for the Eastern Outer Islands, and in 1970 became member of the Governing Council (q.v.) for Gela/Savo/Russells District.
